West Virginia football roster under Rich Rodriguez: Transfer portal, recruiting, staff news from WVU experts

Rich Rodriguez is the only coach to lead the West Virginia Mountaineers to 10 wins or more in three consecutive seasons. Now, he will make his triumphant return. Rodriguez spent time as the head coach at Michigan, Arizona and Jacksonville State since leaving Morgantown, most recently leading the Gamecocks to the Conference USA championship before accepting the head coaching job at West Virginia. He’ll look to lead the Mountaineers back to prominence after going 60-26 over seven seasons with the program from 2001-2007.

However, the landscape has changed since Rodriguez’s first successful stint at West Virginia. How can Rodriguez make WVU a factor in the NIL era and how realistic is it to expect the West Virginia football program to rocket to the top of the Big 12 and into the College Football Playoff picture? If you want the latest West Virginia football news now that Rodriguez is calling the shots for the Mountaineers, be sure be sure to see what the proven team of insiders are saying at EerSports, the 247Sports affiliate that covers WVU.

West Virginia football roster news

Rodriguez’s first task will be to work the college football transfer portal aggressively to build a competitive roster and hold together West Virginia’s 2025 recruiting class. The Mountaineers had 22 players sign their national letter of intent during the early signing period and rank 40th nationally in the 247Sports composite recruiting rankings for the Class of 2025.

Expectation is also that Rodriguez could use his connections at Jacksonville State to supplement his roster in the coming weeks. EerSports expects that redshirt freshman safety Zechariah Poyser could be a top West Virginia transfer target. Poyser had 75 tackles, eight PBUs and three interceptions this season and still has three years of eligibility remaining should he choose to enter the portal.

Another top talent from Jacksonville State is wide receiver Cam Vaughn, a converted quarterback who had 39 catches for 620 yards and four touchdowns to lead the team in all three categories as a freshman. Vaughn would also have three remaining seasons of eligibility if he chose to follow Rich-Rod from Jacksonville State. Get more West Virginia football roster updates at EerSports.
