Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte to take break to recuperate from gallbladder surgery

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is set to spend a period of time away from football after undergoing surgery to remove his gallbladder.

The Premier League club released a statement confirming that the Italian was due to have his gallbladder removed on Wednesday after recently suffering from “severe abdominal pain”.

Tottenham did not put a timeframe on his recovery but said he would return “following a period of recuperation”.

The statement read: “Antonio Conte recently became unwell with severe abdominal pain.

“Following a diagnosis of cholecystitis, he will be undergoing surgery to remove his gallbladder today (Wednesday) and will return following a period of recuperation.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well.”

The NHS describes cholecystitis as inflammation of the gallbladder and says surgery – cholecystectomy – may be recommended to prevent the condition coming back or reduce the risk of complications.

According to the NHS, it can take up to eight weeks to return to full activities after gallbladder surgery.

Tottenham’s next Premier League game is at home to Manchester City on Sunday.

The club are currently fifth in the Premier League table.
